What are Dental Crowns for Children?

A dental crown is a type of restoration that is specifically designed to cover a damaged or otherwise compromised tooth. For kids, a tooth might have cracked or broken, or it may be so severely decayed that there is no other way to replace these decayed areas. We offer crowns for children that are fitted to be comfortable and realistic-looking. Most dental crowns can last for years, and they can be placed over primary (baby) teeth as well as permanent teeth.

The most common reason for kids needing a dental crown is because a tooth has cracked or broken. This might be the result of facial trauma or it could be because they bit down into something hard. Your child might even have a large area of decay in one or more of their teeth. If the amount of decay is significant, a filling may not be enough to repair and restore the actual tooth. This is when a dental crown would be the better option for your child.

To determine if your child might need a new dental crown, we'll perform a complete examination. This allows us to see if a crown is necessary and if so, the best way to go about placing one. Most kids who need a crown can and should have the procedure done as soon as possible. This prevents further damage to the teeth, which could result in the need for more invasive procedures and treatments.

What can be expected during the procedure for Dental Crowns for Children?

The first step is to numb the area with local anesthetic. We then work to file down the damaged tooth and remove any remaining decay. For primary (baby) teeth, we will place a pre-fabricated crown over the tooth and cement it into place. For permanent teeth on teens, we will take impressions and use these molds to make a custom-fitted crown. Their second appointment will involve placing the actual crown and making any minor adjustments needed.
